Our Favourite Hair Styles for Summer!
As a woman, one of the easiest ways to express our own style and individuality is through our hair. Be it the colour, the length, or the style, our hair is something we are always changing and reinventing about ourselves. Of course, we all have our limitations when it comes to what we can do. I have gone through two of my favourite styles for this summer and figured out the best way to make your hair dreams a reality!
1. Beach Waves
Unfortunately, we don't all live in California so the opportunity to get that "natural" beach wave is slim. So, if you can't make it to the beach, here are a couple easy steps to achieve pretty mermaid hair like Kate Hudson's (pictured above).
What you'll need:
• 1/2 inch barrel curling iron
• Sea salt spray (try Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair Beach Waves)
• Diffuser attachment for your hair dryer
**Note: All women's hair is different. Some have a lot more natural wave than others. If you have less, you may need to use a paste or mousse as well to add volume. **
1. Shampoo and condition hair as usual (if your hair is thinner, try skipping conditioner to keep a bit more of the rough texture in it).
2. Towel dry hair, scrunching as you do so with the towel to get rid of excess moisture. If need be, finger comb hair at this point but avoid brushing as this will remove some of the wave.
3. This is the time to bring in both the salt spray and the paste if needed. Spray a liberal amount of salt spray evenly through hair. If paste is needed, put a small amount on hand and rub it around. Scrunch from the bottom up with paste to create more wave.
4. Take diffuser and place a section of hair into the centre of the diffuser, pressing upwards and against the skull while drying. Continue doing this all over head until desired affect is achieved!
5. If there are any stray pieces that didn't wave as much as you would have liked, feel free to use the barrel curling iron to fix them up with a soft ringlet (just don't hold it for too long!)
There you have it: a quick and easy way to achieve the beach waves that are so in style right now. Pair with a cute summer dress or a t-shirt and jeans for a pretty, yet casual look.
2. The Sock Bun
Weird name, right? This fun new trend may sound strange, but it produces such a pretty, full looking bun. For me, I have shoulder length hair with some layers in it and am always frustrated when my buns end up looking more like a little golf ball on the top of my head than the melon size I was hoping for! The first time I saw the sock bun I thought it would be more of the same: long hair needed. However, after trial and error, I have found a way to make my shoulder length hair into a fun and reasonable sized bun!
This look is very easy once you have it down, however you may get frustrated the first couple times you try it. I know there are many different ways of creating the sock bun circling the blog world, but this is the best that I've found for myself.
What you'll need:
• A sock (sounds gross, but don't shy away just yet!)
• Scissors
• Bobby Pins
• Elastics (preferably clear)
• Hairspray
1. Find a clean sock that you no longer need. Cut off the toe end so that it becomes a long tube.
2. Roll the sock inside of itself so that it resembles a donut.
3. Pull your hair up into a pony at the height you'd like your bun to be. Personally, I love the look of a high bun, but it also looks very pretty a bit lower.
4. Now, this is the tricky step. I have seen so many different ways of doing this step and tried half of them myself. The one that works best for me, however, is as follows:
i) Once you have your donut shaped sock, roll it onto your pony tail to the very bottom.
ii) Then, split pony into two sections: one section will come from the front (top) of the pony and the other from the back (bottom). Pull the two sections apart.
iii) Since the sock is at the base of the pony, your hair will need to cover it somehow. Take each section and spread them out around the sock so that they fan out around all sides.
iv) Once you're happy with the coverage, take a clear elastic and place it around the bun so that the hair covering the sock stays in place.
v) Tuck all the excess hair underneath by pulling it around to the back and securing with a couple of bobby pins.
5. Once you have secured all of the extra little hairs you can gently tug on the bun in a few places to make it a bit messier if you prefer the unpolished look. Hairspray well to make sure your pretty sock bun stays in place!
As I mentioned before, this is the best method for me (medium length hair with layers). For a detailed tutorial that may be better if you have very long hair, refer to this video.
There you have it! A fun, fuller bun that's great for all occasions. If you want something a little dressier, try leaving one section out and braiding it to wrap around the bun as so:
I really hope these tutorials help you on your quest to find the perfect summer hairstyle. Be sure to stop by the store rocking your fresh new do' so we can pair it with an equally gorgeous outfit!
