Spring for Iris!

Iris Setlakwe has always been a Candie & Dolls staple. She always designs such feminine, structured pieces, and this collection is especially timeless with the cream and black colour palette.

The silk blouses are easy to wear. We love them paired with the black suit above, but they can easily be paired with a skinny jeans and worn out for dinner. The black dress has an elegant tulip skirt while the neck line has the perfect amount of draping. This dress can be worn with a black skinny leather belt to emphasize the waist.

Stripes are also a huge trend for the spring, and Iris does them perfectly. The long-sleeved wrap dress is flattering on all body types and is a perfect all season piece! If you think a striped dress may be a bit too bold for your taste, Iris' striped top is a great alternative. It's long enough to wear as a tunic with leggings, and looks great belted too!

We're sad to see the warmer weather leave us, because let's face it, we've been lucky to be in the plusses in January! Unfortunately, all good weather does come to an end, but that doesn't mean our clothing has to suffer. More and more brides are planning their weddings in the colder months. There are probably ladies out there wondering "How am I supposed to keep warm AND look great without wearing my biggest sweaters?" Well, we love a challenge.

Sweet Chemise Soiree has come out with some amazing winter dresses, all of which are perfect for any winter wedding, or formal occasion! They all have some great prints, be it bold like the floral print on The Helena (left) or simple like the lace detail on The Countess (right). To keep your arms toasty, you can pair either with a simple blazer or cardigan, or even a shawl! The Elizabeth (centre) is also a great cold weather dress. The long sleeves help keep you warm. Although it seems like a very conservative dress, there's a great deep-v in the back to add a bit of playfulness!

Pairing any one of these dresses with a fun pair of our Philippe Matignon tights will add some extra warmth, and play up any of the styles!

Holiday Recipes

With the holiday season in full swing, we couldn't resist sharing some of our favourite holiday recipes!

Brigitte - Bite-sized Baked Brie

I've always had such a love for all kinds of cheese, but brie has to be one of my favourite. Then once the cranberries come out for the holidays, together they make an awesome pair. Here's one of my favourite recipes, perfect for any holiday party. So delicious, and so much fun!

Makes 24 squares

2 sheets puff pastry, thawed but still cold
1/2 wedge of brie, cold
1/3 cup cranberry jam/sauce (or any flavor you fancy!)
1 large egg, beaten
Splash of milk

All-butter, store bought puff pastry usually comes frozen and folded into thirds. We’regoing to use these folded thirds to our advantage. Cut the puff pastry into thirds along thecreases. Cut each panel into four pieces. They’ll be 2 1/4-inch tall and 3-inches wide. Onesheet of puff pastry will yield 12 rectangles. Cut each rectangle in half. You’ll have 24 littlerectangles that will create 12 little rectangle pockets.
Combine beaten egg and splash of milk. Brush 12 of the small rectangles with egg wash. Ifyou’d like to make brie bites on sticks, now is the time! Place a popsicle stick halfway up thepuff pastry and press in gently. Place a small sliver of brie (rind and all) on top of the eggwash (and stick). Top with about 1/2 teaspoon of cherry jam. Take another square of puffpastry and press between your fingers to make the rectangle slightly bigger. Place puffpastry on top of the cheese and jam. Use a fork to press the edges together. The egg washwill act as a glue. Make sure to seal the edges well by crimping with the fork.
Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Place preparedbrie bites on a parchment lined baking sheet. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with a touchof coarsely ground sea salt. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
Brie bites are best served warm, but are also delicious at room temperature!

Julie - Cookie Brittle

Who doesn't love a giant cookie! We've been baking these giant 'cookie brittles' in my house forever. Easy to make and fun to decorate and customize with smarties before baking in the oven. Yummmmy!!

Ingredients:
2 squares or sticks margarine (1 cup)
1/2 cup white sugar
2 cups flour
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions:
Using a mixmaster, cream 2 squares of margarine. Slowly add in 1/2 cup of white sugar. Blend well. Slowly add 2 cups of regular flour. Mix well. Add 2 tsp vanilla then 1 cup of chocolate chips. Mix until the batter gathers on the beater. Push into 15" pizza pan. Make it as flat and even possible. Bake at 375 F for 18 minutes until lightly brown. Enjoy :)

Emma - Pecan Sandies

To me, nothing says Christmas more than my Mum's Pecan Sandies! I was a particularly fussy eater as a child, and the only way my Mum could get me to try a pecan was in thee fantastic cookies! A family favourite for years, this super tasty, no fuss recipe is sure to please even your toughest critics.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and levelled)
1 cup pecans, coarsely chopped

Instructions:
Preheat over to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy; beat in vanilla and salt. With mixer on low, gradually add flour, beating just until combined. Ass pecans.

Roll dough in 1 1/2-inch balls, and place on two baking sheets, 2 inches apart. Using whatever you have available, lightly flatten each cookie. Bake until cookies are golden brown, 15 to 17 minuets, rotating sheet halfway through. Transfer to wire racks, let cook, and enjoy!

November has begun, and aside from watching the men around us grow out their facial hair, we know this means Holiday season is quickly approaching! Whether it's staff parties, family gatherings or special dinners you know you'll need a top wardrobe to suit these occasions!

We have received our first holiday shipment from Laundry by Shelli Segal. With Halloween weekend coming up we thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite Pumpkin recipes! Whether it warms you on a cool night or turns your baking into a spooky activity, we know you'll love trying out these recipes!

Creamy Pumpkin-Peanut Soup
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
2 tsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped (1 1/4 cups)
3 cloves garlic, smashed
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp chili pepper flakes
1 can solid-pack pumpkin puree (15 oz)
1 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
1 jar roasted red peppers (7 oz), drained, 1 tablespoon chopped and reserved for garnish
1/3 cup smooth reduced-fat natural peanut butter
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
2 Tbsp chopped roasted peanuts
2 Tbsp chopped scallion greens

1. Heat oil in a 4-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, until golden, about 10 minutes. Add garlic and cook an additional 2 minutes.

2. Add turmeric, paprika, and chili flakes; stir. Add pumpkin puree, broth, peppers, and peanut butter; whisk to incorporate and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer for 5 minutes, then stir in sugar, salt, pepper, and lemon juice.

3. Transfer to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Divide among 4 bowls and garnish with sour cream, peanuts, reserved chopped peppers, and scallion greens.

Yaffa's:

Glowing Jack-o'-Lantern Cookies

1/3 cup hard candies
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar

1 egg
1 teaspoon lemon zest, optional
1 teaspoon lemon juice
red and yellow liquid coloring or orange paste coloring
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment, foil, or a Silpat mat (not wax paper, which will stick).

2. Unwrap the candies if wrapped, put them in a heavy ziplock bag, and crush them into powder with the flat side of a meat tenderizer or the bottom of a saucepan.

3. Beat the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl until creamy, and then blend in the egg, lemon zest, if using, lemon juice, and food coloring. Begin with 6 drops of red and 5 drops of yellow liquid coloring or a dab of orange paste; add more to achieve your desired shade. Stir well until fully combined.

4. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt to the bowl, and mix well.

5. Roll half of the dough out on a lightly floured surface and cut out 8 big jack-o’-lantern shapes with a cookie cutter, or freehand with the tip of a paring knife. Make short, fat pumpkins about 4 inches wide by 3 inches high, or make tall, thin pumpkins about 4 inches tall and 2 to 3 inches wide. You want some variety here! Use the knife to cut out big eyes, nose, and mouth in each (don’t do a lot of teeth – they tend to break off). Keep in mind that you want the eyes, nose, and mouth to be wide enough to hold the melted candy. Carefully lift the pumpkins with a spatula and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets. Use the tip of the paring knife to push back the eye, nose, and mouth openings to make them as wide as possible without losing the bridges of dough between the features. Repeat with the remaining dough half.

6. With the tip of a small spoon, sprinkle candy powder generously into the eyes, nose, and mouth openings, directly to the parchment. Try to keep the candy off the surface of the cookies.

7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, watching carefully. Remove as soon as the candy has melted; don’t let the surface of the cookies brown. They should be just set and very pale.

8. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets, or carefully lift the parchment off the sheets and transfer the whole sheet to cooling racks (only if the racks are big enough to hold the sheet). When the cookies are completely cool, carefully peel off the parchment.

Seriously, our new Kenneth Cole boots are so comfortable; it's as if they were made for walking in all day long!

The first pair we've received is the Flirty Skirt. The elongated zipper detail, and contrast between the cognac and cocoa colour are just a few reasons why we love this boot! Don't be afraid of the heal height. This wedge gives your foot ample support, allowing you to walk around all day pain free. The simple, yet edgy design makes it a fall must-have!

Our second pair is the Keep It Hot, and the name says it all. Don't be skeptical about the heel! The hidden platform in the toe keeps these boots very comfortable, and gives you some extra height. Pair these with your favorite dress, skirt or leggings! These boots are a great addition to anyone's fall wardrobe.

The last pair we've recieved is the Don't Let Me Go. These great little booties are a perfect pair to wear underneath dress pants or overtop of a pair of skinny jeans. The suede and leather detailing adds a stylish touch, with the pointed toe elongating the leg. The rubber sole on the shoe also gives you good support when walking around those icy sidewalks during the winter!

We are still expecting some more fall boots in the near future, but for now, we have these three great styles in sizes 6 to 10 (including half sizes). Hurry in and try on a pair before they're gone!

Each season we eagerly await the business wear from Iris Setlakwe. This season's first shipment did not disappoint! We are very excited to have a number of Iris suits, dresses and blazers arrive at the store. Iris has been crafting some of the best suits for a number of years. Legwarmers! They're Back!

When we say legwarmers, you're probably thinking 80's bright, neon spandex, and Jane Fonda workout DVDs. Thankfully, that's not the case! Legwarmers are a great addition to this fall's layered look. This year, we're carrying legwarmers from one of our favorite hosiery brands, Trasparenze. We've been carrying this Italian brand for the past couple years, and they have an amazing quality in all their tights! They always create great designs that can play up any outfit, and are always made from the softest fabrics.

It's easy to pair legwarmers with any outfit. Rhianna wears hers bare-legged with black stilettos, while Milla Jovovich pairs them with leggings to add some extra warmth. Wearing a neutral colored legwarmer modernizes the usual 80's legwarmer most people are used to!

If you're still skeptical about the legwarmer look, another alternative is to pair it under some boots! Barelegged or with tights, this look is carefree and effortless. We have your basic colors, such as black, grey and navy blue to help you incorporate this trend into your own wardrobe!

There is nothing I love more than a quick and easy, stylish outfit for an everyday look. Personally, I love wearing leggings, and with spending my days at Candie & Dolls or the University of Manitoba, I will spend all day in them if I can! A great way to pull off a stylish, yet comfortable look is to pair it with some staple pieces. Each year I stock up on Kenneth Cole knee-high boots. The new Flirt-y Skirt wedge in brown leather pairs perfectly with any black legging, and it comfortable enough to spend all day in! If you want a thicker legging try the Sanctuary Pointe Legging; perfect for a more structured fit. Finish the look off with a fantastic tunic, like the Splendid Heather Dress, and a Mackage leather jacket for those cooler fall days.

A Little Pop of Colour

I love Iris Setlakwe's tailored suits. She always finds a way to take a classic cut and make it unique with subtle details. One of my favorite trends this fall is Neutral colours. Just like Yaffa, I'm also a fan of wearing leggings all day long. My go-to cozy-casual outfit this fall is the Iris cable knit cream sweater (it has leather elbow patches!!) paired with the camel Iris Suit jacket. This is a great outfit with jeans, black pants or even leggings! I've matched mine up with a floral Echo scarf and our new EMU Merrigia shoes for extra comfort. This outfit is perfect for me, as it's comfortable enough to run around in all day at work and school!

LBD

A fall favorite of mine is the Little Black Dress. The key to getting the most wear out of your LBD is to find one that can work for both day and night. The Leather Waist Dress by Susana Monaco is a perfect day/night dress. The classic cut works for all occasions and the leather paneling adds a bit of an edge! Pair it with a classic heal for day time or dress it up with a fun shoe like the Know Diggity from Kenneth Cole for an evening event.

Designer Profile: Custo Barcelona

In the early 1980’s, Custo and David Dalmau went on a long worldwide trip, which allowed them to discover varied artistic, cultural and philosophical expressions. It was after this trip, that the brothers created Custo Barcelona. They were mostly inspired by the colorful and innovative style of the local Californian surfers. At the time, it was unlike any fashion they saw in Spain.

The Dalmau brothers learned everything about print techniques, especially graphic design; a field they were already comfortable with. Through time, their research on colors and prints have given the brothers designs that are bold, yet sophisticated.

We are always impressed by the fun designs Custo Barcelona creates each season, and this fall is no different!

Even with the hot September weather, we could not be more excited for our new shipment of EMU boots! This is Candie & Doll's second winter season carrying EMU, and we love seeing the new styles they come out with each year.

EMU Australia was founded in 1994 in Greelong, Victoria, just minutes away from the world renowned Bells Beach; where the "original ugly sheepskin boot" was invented. The Australian sheepskin boot, otherwise known as the Ugg boot, was developed in the 1970's as a way to combat cold feet after winter surfing. Greelong is Australia's prime wool, cattle and grain region and is still the home for the Australian company's head office.

EMU boots and slippers are made with 100% Australian Sheepskin - unlike competitors that will mix breeds from other countries. The Emu is also Australia's national bird and is proudly displayed with the kangaroo on the Australian National Coat of Arms.

Designer Profile: Laundry by Shelli Segal

Shelli Segal is the visionary behind the contemporary dress label "Laundry by Shelli Segal." As one of the top-selling women's lines in American department stores, Segal's Laundry is known for its cutting-edge design and appealing colors and prints. She possesses a sharp eye for the casual but sexy clothing that best exemplifies California chic.

Enrolling at the Mayer School of Fashion Design in New York City, Segal began her design career working at a number of New York companies that made women's clothing. She later moved to LA, and easily found design jobs in the burgeoning fashion industry in southern California, include Leon Max, La Blanca sportswear, and JM Studio.

Segal was hired at Laundry in 1992 as their head designer. Launched a few years earlier, Laundry was a contemporary dress and sportswear line. The company was thriving by the time Segal joined, but her spirited, fashion-forward designs soon made the company an industry powerhouse! Celebrity fans of the label include Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Aniston and Blake Lively.

Fall 2008 announced the return of the Laundry by Shelli Segal name, with its Los Angeles based heritage of dressing the contemporary girl in sexy, on-trend dresses; taking her from work to play.

Fall Trend: The Obi Belt

Another great fall trend we're seeing is plaid. Plaid is such a classic print that it's been an established fall trend for years. Designers this year have taken the print and created new and amazing ways to wear for this fall.

Burberry Prorsum created beautiful wool jackets, Rag & Bone stuck with a scottish feel and added fringe to liven up the print, and Carven as well as Chris Benz created a less grungy, more playful take on plaid dresses.

Fall Trends: Leather

Lately, we've been browsing through the runway shows on Style.com and picking out our favorite trends for the upcoming fall season. We love all the detailed leather, tartan prints and bright reds, oranges and cobalt blues! We'll be showcasing these trends in the next few blog posts, and letting you know how you can wear simplified versions of them.

Leather has always been a fall necessity, especially in jackets. It's a great insulator, and its natural sheen can dress up any outfit. However, this fall, you can start wearing leather in some interesting new ways!

We saw leather sleeves at Gareth Pugh and Karen Walker, amazing leather detailing at Balenciaga and Ann Demeulemeester and even full, leather dresses at Zac Posen and Marios Schwab. It's safe to say leather isn't just for jackets and accessories anymore.

Of course, it's a bit harder to pull off an entire leather dress or skirt when it's not on the runway. We have a great alternative to add a bit of edge to your wardrobe.

Iris' attention to detail is combined with classic cuts to create extremely elegant silhouettes. After having two children, her vision was to design clothes that celebrate femininity. Not only is she talented, Iris Setlakwe is also socially conscious, supporting a regional organization that helps individuals struggling with anorexia and bulimia. What an incredible woman!

Folklorama Fun

At Candie & Dolls, we love to showcase Canadian brands, but you can also find some international brands at our shop! For example, ETC is an Italian line with simple classics and pretty details. The 100% cotton dresses sold instantly this summer and we're very excited to see what's new this fall! A new brand to Candie & Dolls this year was Natasha Gan from Australia. With beautiful patterns and colours, her dresses were an instant hit!

We also enjoy music from around the world and you can occasionally hear French, Spanish, Italian and even Chinese music at Candie & Dolls! In light of this, we'd like to draw your attention to Folklorama, a highlight of summer in Winnipeg that demonstrates our city's vast multiculturalism.

With 46 pavilions, including three new ones, at locations across the city over two weeks, you are sure to find something that intrigues you! Each pavilion has music and dance featuring local talent or international acts. You will also be able to sample delicious food and drink from the region that the pavilion represents. Some staff favourites include the pavillions from the Indian, Israeli, Korean, Brazilian and Chilean communities.

August long weekend is the last long weekend of the summer. This means no more beaches or trips to the cabin for the rest of the year! Here at Candie & Dolls, we like to go out with a bang! Here's some of our favorite outfits, put together especially for the long weekend.

The first outfit is for a casual evening with its subdued summer colours, light fabrics and skinny jeans. You can dress it up and hit a patio on Corydon or wear it to an outdoor event like Ballet in the Park. RWB's annual free summer show returns tonight through Friday at the Lyric Theatre!

Sangria Summer!

In honor of the August Long, Winnipeg's hottest weekend (hopefully!), we wanted to share with you our favorite sangria recipes!

Yaffa - The Mix-n-Berry

My love for sangria began on the many patios here in Winnipeg. This year, there seems to be more options than ever to have a tasty pitcher of Red or White Sangria! Some of my favorites include Confusion Corner Bar & Grill, Segovia and Earl's Sangria.

However, when it comes to making sangria at home (or at the lake) I choose the 'non-recipe' method!

Ingredients:
1 bottle of your favorite wine (Red or White) - My favorite is Red for a bold flavor. Try a nice Spanish or South American wine like Espritu de Argentina
1 container of juice (any flavor) - I love using Sun Rype's Mango Tangerine
2-3 different types of berries or fruits - Such as blueberries, raspberries or oranges
A splash of Scotch or Whisky - For a bold kick!
Sliced Orange rounds - For the glasses
Lots of Ice

Preparation:
Pour wine into a big pitcher with lots of ice and the berries of your choice at the bottom. Add the juice - make sure the juice doesn't overpower the wine (I usually use the entire wine bottle and most of the juice). Add the splash of scotch or whisky. Make sure not to add too much as this ingredient should only compliment the flavors with a slight bold taste. Stir everything together in the pitcher. Pour over ice in large glasses and serve with the orange rounds on the rim. Then enjoy!

Carly - White Sangria
I have to confess that I am not a huge wine lover but I do enjoy sangria. Although red sangria brings back memories from a trip to Spain, I decided to go for white sangria for a change. When I came across this recipe with peach schnapps, I knew I'd love it! Unlike Yaffa, I am a girl who needs recipes but feel free to adjust the proportions to your liking.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup Peach Schnapps

1/4 cup Cognac

1/8 cup White Sugar (you can substitute honey if you prefer)

2 Oranges, sliced into rounds

1 Mango, peeled and sliced

2 (750 millilitres) Bottles Dry White Wine such as Pinot Grigio, chilled

1/2 Litre Ginger Ale, chilled

Preparation:

In a pitcher, combine peach schnapps, cognac, sugar, sliced oranges and sliced mangos. Chill for at least an hour. Stir in white wine and ginger ale.

There is no question that during the Royal North American Tour, the thought on everyone's mind was "What will Kate Middleton wear next?" As one of the top fashion icons in the world, the Duchess of Cambridge's style will be remembered and replicated for many years to come.

Here are some trends we noticed throughout her stay.

Cinched Waist Dresses

As a favorite of the Duchess, this flattering style can be seen on Kate over and over again. Preferably with a high neckline, Kate chooses to wear dresses that gather at the waist and often compliment with cap or full length sleeves.

Button-Down Shirts with Jeans

For the more casual days, Kate wore loosely structured button-down shirts tucked into jeans. (Interesting fact: One of Kate's favorite jeans designer is JBrand!) This style allowed the Duchess to be casual, yet remain polished and dignified. (Even with a cowboy hat!)

Beige Shoes

Over dozens of outfit changes, nothing stood out more than Kate's recurring beige shoes, paired with a matching beige clutch. It's no wonder that these shoes were a favorite of the Duchess; a pair of basic beige pumps elongates the leg and will go with virtually anything in your wardrobe!

The Winnipeg Fringe Festival is the most popular theatre festival in the city, and is ranked the second largest of its kind in North America. The festival welcomes productions from all across the world to perform in venues set up all around downtown! Fringe Festivals originated in Edinburgh, Scotland over 50 years ago, and within the past 28 years has migrated to Canadian cities such as Edmonton, and of course Winnipeg. The Fringe Festival is a fantastic way to watch emerging and experienced performers and writers showcase their talents in a variety of shows!

Yesterday was the Fringe opening night and Candie & Dolls employees, Brigitte and Yaffa, were able to catch a few plays, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Spring Awakening. Other shows they're excited to see are Hersteria, D'n'D 3.5, Outside Joke and Crumbs, to name a few!

With over 150 shows to see (some for kids too!), you're bound to find something that fits your taste. So gather up your friends and family, and take some time to experience what the Winnipeg Fringe Festival has to offer!

Patio Season Faves

So far, the weather has been amazing for us this summer! With the sun shining well into the evening, it's definitely patio season time. We've picked some of our favorite outfits to wear while you're outside sipping on some summery cocktails!

This jersey cotton Kaida dress is one of those amazing day to night pieces. Pair it with a blazer to wear to work, then head straight out after with a pair of heels and you're ready for a night out.

Our favorite maxi dress! This LA Made piece is amazingly comfortable, and surprisingly sexy with it's deep-v neckline (we also love pairing it with a cute bandeau underneath!). The pleats under the bust add just a bit of fun detail too.

We love this Kaida tunic for it's unique asymmetrical sleeves! It's an easy piece to throw on over leggings with cute sandals, or bare legged with heels.

All three items were made with comfort and ease in mind, so that's why they're perfect for looking great while lounging around!

Summer Scarves!

At Candie & Dolls we're not only about clothes; it's important to accessorize in order to complete an outfit! An accessory we love to wear is scarves, which can serve many purposes. A scarf with splashes of bright colours can really make an outfit pop. Here, we have paired the Echo Watercolour Scarf with an LA Made top.

In addition to being pretty, scarves are also very useful . They are a great alternative to a cardigan for a windy day or cool summer nights! One of our favourite scarves is seen here with a Kaida dress- it can also be worn as a shawl because of its triangular shape and the grey jersey layer underneath the silk pattern is very soft.

Speaking of patterns, we have several scarves in beautiful bold prints, such as the one below that dresses down a fancier top. A patterned scarf livens up a solid-coloured or neutral outfit.

Designer Profile: Kenneth Cole

Twenty years ago, Kenneth Cole had a dream to sell designer shoes. With little money and no retail space, Kenneth Cole lined up his factories in Europe and designed a collection. When he came back to the United States to sell his shoes, he realized that he needed to set himself apart from the 1100 shoes companies also selling their collections.

Kenneth Cole then came up with the idea to borrow a truck from a friend's trucking company and park it in Midtown Manhattan while selling shoes out of the back. Only problem was that the city of New York only gave out parking permits to production companies filming full length movies and utility companies such as AT&T.

Since Kenneth Cole's merchandise had nothing to do with utilities, he decided to change the company name to Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. and apply for a permit to shoot a full length film called "The Birth of Shoe Company"!

They were open for business with a director (and a camera with film), models as actresses and two NYPD officers as doormen. In two and a half days, Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. sold 40 thousand pairs of shoes and has kept on filming since!

Today, the company is still named Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. as a reminder to the "importance of resourcefulness and innovative problem solving".
